Curly Coat

Devon Rex cats are rarely bathed; often, this is done only before a performance to ensure the best possible presentation. They leave markings on light-colored surfaces and have a tendency to gather oil, especially around the neck, armpits, and stomach. It is advised to concentrate on washing bedding since frequent showers might create a vicious cycle of needing additional baths. To maintain the curl density of the coat, bathing should be planned five to seven days before a show and a gentle shampoo should be used with thorough rinsing. While prolonged bathing might cause a dry coat, a small application of a hairdressing-finishing product can help replenish lost oils.

Ears

Wax buildup in Devon Rex cats, especially lighter-colored ones, can be an issue. Start cleaning their ears weekly at eight weeks of age to help acclimatize them. While cleaning, gently pull the ear tip to inspect for issues. Normal wax is light brown; black, red, or yellow-green discharge indicates problems. Use an animal ear wipe and apply 5-10 drops of ear cleanser, massaging the base for 15-20 seconds, then use a cotton bud for extra wax removal. Seek veterinary care for signs of irritation or infection, as ear mites are common in young cats and can be treated with medications like Advocate or Revolution.

Claws & Teeths

Cats that are kept indoors need regular nail clippings, ideally every month. Cat nail trimmers are recommended for this purpose, as they are generally superior to clippers. Care should be taken not to cut into the quick of the nail, which can cause bleeding; only the tips of the claws should be removed. Additionally, providing scratching poles can help redirect your cat's scratching behavior away from furniture. It is important to note that declawing is not advised, and Dionysus's Devons strongly opposes the practice.
DeVon Rex cats often experience runny eyes or excessive tearing due to their distinctive facial structure. This excessive weeping can lead to staining around the eyes, which may be challenging to clean with just warm water. Sometimes, a crusty, dry residue may form. While professional cleaning products can effectively address these stains, caution is advised in their use. A cotton wool ball or pad soaked in saline solution is an effective method for wiping away the discharge.
